What is PrEP?
PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a medication that is taken to reduce the risk of getting HIV infection from sex.
PrEP is highly effective, and studies have estimated it reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99 percent. These medications are the reason that new HIV infections in New York City have been greatly reduced in the last five years. There are different medications used to prevent HIV transmission. There are currently two oral medications and one injectable medication that are FDA approved.
PrEP is safe to use however there are some mild side effects that do get better typically over time as the medication is used and the body gets acclimated to it.
There is required monitoring that is done while you are taking PrEP. This consists of blood work, STD testing as well as general STD prevention counseling, and this is done usually every 3-4 months while on PrEP.
