What is PEP?
PEP, or post-exposure prophylaxis is taking a medication to prevent an infection before it has a chance to happen. Currently the post-exposure regimen to reduce the risk of getting an STD after unprotected sex is Doxycycline 200mg taken within 24-72 hours of sexual activity. This regimen is now called DOXY-PEP. It has the potential to reduce the risk of Syphilis, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea quite significantly.
DOXY-PEP is not for everyone, and its use is considered on a case-by-case basis. There are potential side effects to this medication and this needs to be considered prior to use.
